I quit smoking for my New Year's resolution, but I have been suffering and there are moments when all I can think of is to have a cigarette and my willpower is wearing thin. Can acupuncture help me quit for good?

It is good news to hear that you want to quit smoking. Your letter mentions that you have been smoking for 30 years. It takes a great deal of courage and determination to quit smoking and break such a long-standing addiction. Acupuncture can help you by minimizing cravings, calming the nervous system and strengthening will power. Acupuncture intercepts messages sent by the brain to the body that demand more nicotine, thereby disrupting the addictive process. I've helped many people successfully stop smoking who were really ready to quit.

What kind of training do acupuncturists have? How do I know if they are qualified?

Be sure the practitioner you choose is competent and is qualified. That means he is certified by NCCAOM ( National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) and is licensed in Rhode Island as a Doctor of Acupuncture. It is imperative that the acupuncture practitioner uses disposable, single use needles.
