"Is Acupuncture a kind of psychological treatment?..

First, Moxa is well and keeping me happy. The fact that acupuncture worked on animals was the first evidence that it is not psychological treatment. Extensive scientific research made great advances in comprehending intrinsic physiological mechanisms of acupuncture. There is no more psychological than in any other form of medicine.
Perhaps this question remains because some acupuncture practitioners heavily depend on psychological intervention in their approach, presenting themselves as all-powerful carriers of the ultimate esoteric knowledge, prodigies of a new kind. Sometime it may backfire. Unrealistic expectations may be intriguing and tempting for desperate patients... and inevitably disappointing.
Of course, establishing good rapport with your doctor, when both patient and practitioner are united by common task, is a very good thing. But it does not have to cloud you judgment, especially when it comes to pain syndrome or conditions where your response to the treatment and self-assessment is essential for the accurate evaluation and treatment plan adjustment. Do not try to "flatter" your doctor saying you are better if you are not. This wouldn't help much, as well as the opposite: sometimes you might feel that if you present more complaints you will get more attention, "more value for the money". This may lead to excessive treatment, overkill. The best way to cooperate with your physician is to tell him the truth.
Do you have to 'believe' in acupuncture? It is up to you. Acupuncture will do the job anyway. If you need to believe in something - believe in God. And believe that you can get well.
