Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Question:
I have been plagued with irritable bowel syndrome for many years. A coworker has suggested that I try acupuncture. I am afraid that if I start treatments, it will stir things up. What is your opinion?

Answer:
Irritable bowel syndrome is among the diseases and chronic conditions that can be helped with acupuncture.
As with most chronic diseases, there is a chance that your symptoms can be aggravated for the first few days. It is difficult to predict how many sessions you will need to keep your symptoms under control. Most likely you will have to take two to three courses of acupuncture (10-15 sessions each) within the first year with supportive treatments every 2 weeks in between. There is no universal protocol, and every patient is evaluated on an individual basis.

Acupuncture is proven to be very effective in the treatment of ailments accompanied by spastic reactions. The tendency to develop intestinal spasms and to desynchronize peristalsis is the main reason for pain and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Acupuncture helps to restore the proper regulation of the intestinal muscle tone, and to normalize digestion and bowel movements. Irritable bowel is a chronic condition and it requires long and systematic treatment.
Acupuncture is only one part of the treatment plan. But there is no need to be pessimistic, you can get better and live a healthy life like many of my patients who have carried this diagnosis for years and now are symptom-free.
