Shiatsu technique: is it a form of acupuncture?
Question:
My therapist uses the ancient Shiatsu technique with me. I got the impression that it is a form of acupuncture. Can you please tell me more about it?

Answer:

The “ancient” Shiatsu technique is not as ancient as it is commonly thought. It belongs to recent history. The father of Shiatsu, Tokujiro Namikoshi, was born in 1905 and introduced the technique in Hokkaido, Japan in 1925, when the word “Shiatsu” was used for the first time. He opened the Japan Shiatsu Institute in February, 1940.
Like acupuncture, Shiatsu is effective because it treats the whole body as opposed to isolated parts of the body. Instead of acupuncture needles, only hands and fingers are used, which may not be as effective as acupuncture. Similar to acupuncture, Shiatsu employs specific points on the body that are associated with an internal body system. Pressure put on these points sets up reflexes in the internal organs and stimulates them to function in a healthy way. It is both diagnostic and therapeutic, and has no adverse side effects. Shiatsu is used safely on all age populations.
Acupuncture is a dynamic and developing field, and there have been many advances in both acupuncture and its associated therapies in the twentieth century.
