National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) on General Clinical Research Centers: Concept Review.
Historically, in the 1970s and 1980s, NIH supported some of the first CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) clinical research through General Clinical Research Centers (GCRCs). Such support has continued to the present day. However, the support is limited both in the number of projects funded (out of the thousands of GCRC projects funded in FY 2001, only 12 were CAM: 10 biologically based, 1 acupuncture, and 1 mind-body) and the numbers of GCRCs involved (15%).
The proposed concept is expected to facilitate and expand the evaluation of CAM treatments for the wide array of diseases and conditions currently being evaluated at GCRCs.

The Mechanism of Acupuncture - Beyond neurohumoral theory
by Charles Shang
Based on the morphogenetic singularity theory, acupuncture points originate from the organizing centers in morphogenesis. This theory explains several long-standing puzzles in both developmental biology and acupuncture research, including the distribution and non-specific activation of organizing centers and acupuncture points, the high electric conductance of acupuncture points, the polarity effect of electroacupuncture and side effect profile of acupuncture, as well as the ontogeny, phylogeny and physiological function of the meridian system and chakra system.
